Slate is a soft porous stone, surprisingly comfortable to walk on in shoes, socks, stockings - even bare feet!  The porosity of slate adds another surprising benefit - warmth.  Slate floors retain heat, rather than reflecting it like ceramic tiles, marble or granite.

The natural texture of Pietra Art slate makes it skid resistant, even when wet.  This feature makes it a natural choice for bathrooms, foyers, kitchens, and stairs.

Typical Uses: Pietra Art Slate floor and wall tile is appropriate for all residential and commercial indoor wall, floor, countertop and backsplash applications.

  • Smaller sizes are tumbled to leave a radius on the edges and a weather appearance.  Size variation on tumbled stones varies more than the untumbled field tiles.
  • It is not usually necessary to seal slate outdoors.  However, as with any natural stone tiles, slate installed indoors should be sealed with a high quality water based penetrating sealer.
  • A variety of mosaics are offered with this product line.  Mosaics feature water-soluble glue on the backing mesh that will not interfere with adhesion when used with water-containing installation adhesives.
  • Since slate is a naturally rough stone, Pietra Art Slate is gauged (machined) on one side to create a thickness within a defined parameter and provide a flat backing for ease of installation.  The product will vary in thickness but the range of thickness with gauged slate is less than that of the natural random thickness of stone.
  • To clean slate, brush wall surfaces occasionally to remove dust and "freshen" or dust with dusting attachment of vacuum cleaner.  Slate floors can be washed with a detergent and water solution and rinsed well.  They are not damaged by alkali cleaners, but strong solutions are not needed for cleaning.  A water-based, self-polishing wax can be applied over a clean, dry, sealed floor for extra protection and shine.  Weekly damp mopping with a barely damp mop on a waxed floor will keep it clean for quite a while before the washing with detergent is needed.  - From an article written by Anne Field, Extension Specialist, Emeritus with references from Georgia Extension bulletin Buying and Caring for Smooth Surface Flooring: Masonry.
  • Flaking and Shaling are an inherent part of the beauty of natural slate and should be taken into consideration.
  • Since Pietra Art Slate is a natural stone product, no claims will be accepted for variations in shade or appearance.
  • Slate is not suitable for outdoor usage under freeze/thaw conditions.
