Five months into the rebuilding of Haiti’s homes and businesses, Florida Tile has thus far donated more than 90,000 square feet of porcelain floor tile, nearly 20 percent of the entire humanitarian request for these materials.
“The rebuilding effort will be a long one,” said Dan Marvin, Florida Tile’s Director of Quality Assurance and Technical Services. “The earthquake left over 250,000 homes and 30,000 commercial and government buildings destroyed. Tile plays an important role not only as a valuable and versatile building product but also one which is culturally appropriate for that part of the world. We will continue to send tile to Haiti as long as there is a need,“ said Marvin.
Within hours of the January 12 earthquake which struck near the capital city of the island nation of Haiti, containers of humanitarian aid began to arrive in Haiti. Almost as quickly, Operation Compassion put out the call for tile donations to assist with reconstruction. According to Marvin, Florida Tile’s response was immediate.
“This type of outreach is not new for Florida Tile. We have worked for years with the Mountain Re-source Center and other groups like Tile Partners for Humanity (an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity) to donate our un-saleable or surplus tile to worthy charities across the US and around the world,” Marvin added.
“When Operation Compassion started collecting an estimated 500,000 square feet of tile to send to Haiti, Florida Tile responded immediately. Starting in January and continuing through today, through our Mountain Re-Source partner we have donated an estimated 90,000 square feet of tile, almost 20 percent of Operation Compassion’s goal, he said.
Operation Compassion sends all tile donated by Florida Tile to Haiti for building and rebuilding projects. In a tropical climate such as Haiti, tile is an all-purpose product that can be used for a number of applications both inside and outside the home.
Both small and larger homes can benefit from the use of tile, grout, thin-set and tile tools. Haitians are accustomed to using tile products and can often lay and finish the tile work themselves which also provides a means of income for those previously unemployed. The newly tiled floors are often stronger and more structurally stable than those they replaced in this seismically active area.
“We’re proud of our commitment to the people of Haiti and wherever our charitable donations can mean the difference between an attractive and very sound floor and no floor at all. Through our partnerships like those with the Mountain Re-Source Center and Operation Compassion, we are able to reach out to people in their time of greatest need,” Marvin said.
